Brief history of the ship

The STOVL aircraft cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi, serial number C 551 is a unit of the Navy which takes its name from the general of the Risorgimento Giuseppe Garibaldi. The unit was the first aircraft carrier in the history of the Navy to enter active service since two aircraft carriers, Aquila and Sparviero, were prepared during the Second World War but never entered service. The ship has held the prestigious role of naval flagship from 1987 to 2011, when it moved to the new aircraft carrier Cavour. The role of flag carrier of the fleet had been covered from 1961 to 1971 with the same name and the same freshman, from the cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The ship underwent a modernization in 2003 and a major restructuring in 2013.

the program of its realization born from the need to replace the two Doria, one of them, the Duilio, destined to a school ship for the students of the Academy of Livorno to replace the San Giorgio. The choice fell on a tuttoponte cruiser for the antisubmarine fight, with a continuous bridge for a large group of anti-submarine helicopters. The unit had to combine in addition to the typical capabilities of a major unit such as a cruiser, also command and control capability for an offshore operating group to coordinate the activity of a naval training, putting at its disposal its own resources to be integrated with those of the other units used in the mission.

Its construction was planned according to the Naval Law of 1975, after which in 1974 the Navy had subjected to Italian industry a rough design for the construction of a naval unit of bridge. The initial project included a flat flight deck typical of helicopter units. The project presented by Italcantieri is imposed on a Breda project. The unit was ordered by the Navy on 21 November 1977 and the contract with Italcantieri was stipulated on 20 February 1978. The construction of the unit took place in the Monfalcone factories. The cutting of the first sheet took place on 28 April 1980 and on 9 September of the same year the construction of the first block in the workshop began. On March 26, 1981, the first block was set up at the airport of the Monfalcone shipyard. During the construction of the unit at the airport, it was decided to adopt the ski jump (jump-jump) not foreseen in the design phase. On January 31st 1983 the last block on the airport was completed and on April 19th the construction of the superstructure was completed. The ship was launched on June 4, 1983 in the presence of the President of the Council of Ministers Amintore Fanfani and the Minister of Defense Lelio Lagorio who gave the inaugural speech; godmother of the launch was Mrs. Flavia Donata Solvetti in Garibaldi, wife of the last descendant of the Hero of the two worlds. After the sea trials began on December 3, 1984, the ship was delivered to the Navy on September 30, 1985 and at the time of its entry into service was the smallest aircraft carrier in the world.

The ship received the flag of combat in Naples on October 3, 1987, delivered by the presidency of the National Sailors Association of Italy and the presidency of the Italian Navy League.

The first plane on board

Because of the legislation in force at the time of entry into service, which allowed only the Air Force to possess fixed-wing military aircraft, Giuseppe Garibaldi did not, until the change of the law in 1989, any aircraft. Following the approval of law 36 of 1 February 1989, the Navy was authorized to equip itself with fixed wing aircraft. After an assessment between the British Sea Harrier and the American Harrier II, the Italian choice fell on the latter equipped with a more sophisticated multimode radar similar to that mounted on the F / A 18 Hornet, and that contrary to the Sea Harrier is still in production; in 1990 the order was made for the purchase of the AV-8B + with the delivery to the pilots and technicians of the Navy of the first two aircraft that took place on 7 June 1991, at the Cherry Point Marine base in North Carolina, with the official delivery ceremony that took place the following 23 August on board the Garibaldi, moored at the American base in Norfolk, Virginia.

Although Garibaldi had boarded the first aircraft on board only since 1991, formerly during the international exercises, some Allied Harriers had operated on the Garibaldi’s flight deck as in the NATO Dragon Hammer 90 exercise.

History of the image

On the evening of 12 July 2004, a NATO naval training is engaged in an exercise in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco, also taking part in the aircraft carrier of the Italian Navy “Giuseppe Garibaldi”.

Garibaldi, delivered to MMI in September 1987, at the time was the smallest aircraft carrier. For MMI, the first aircraft carrier to enter service, in 2004 still the flagship of our fleet.

From the bridge of the aircraft carrier H.Truman (CVA75) class Nimitz, also engaged in the exercise, a helicopter is raised in flight, which after a short flight approaches our aircraft carrier. On board there is photographer Josha Kinter of the United States Navy

Especially this second strikes me: the uncertain light, the great wave on which the ship breaks its bow … I like it very much, and I think it represents the ship well.

So I take inspiration from this photo, I decide to do a watercolor that however takes the ship more in profile and then from a lower point of view, closer to the surface of the sea.

I work with the watercolor because it gives me the opportunity to perform a
pencil drawing very accurate and gives me the opportunity to intervene in the design phase and easily correct errors.

From the watercolor then I get the final drawing on canvas Cm 50×70 and at this point I paint the picture with oil colors

The original watercolor is for sale (quote catalog number 108)

It is possible to buy watercolor prints for € 20.00 each (quote catalog number 116)

The oil painting is for sale (quote catalog number 387)
