Nave Palinuro nel 1965
NAVE PALINURO NEGLI ANNI ’60
Dopo essere entrata in servizio presso la Marina Militare Italiana nella seconda meta’ degli anni ’50 e dipinta con lo schema adottato per il “Vespucci” ( e Colombo), negli anni’60 la documentazione fotografica evidenzia un cambiamento nello schema di colorazione dello scafo che sara’ quello che con poche varianti arriverà fino al presente.
La fascia bianca , raccordandosi con il fregio di prua, non appare pi’ orizzontale, ma dalla prua scende fino quasi al galleggiamento a poppa. sulla fascia bianca sono stati dipinti 18 portelli neri.
Questo schema veniva adottato dalle navi mercantili della seconda metà del 1800 e serviva ,da lontano, a far scambiare la nave da carico , per una nave da guerra e quindi cercare di tenere alla larga i pirati barbareschi che infestavano le acque ( e le coste rivierasche ) del mediterraneo.
Le fiancate del cassero ( la struttura sopraelevata che da mezza nave finisce a poppa) in un primo tempo dipinte di color ocra, nel nuovo schema sono dipinte di bianco, mentre la timoneria a poppa mantiene il color ocra del precedente schema.
E’ curioso che proprio negli stessi anni, in particolare nel 1951 ,la fondazione Cini , per il suo Centro Marinaro (nato per aiutare gli orfani dei marittimi morti durante la guerra, ad avviarsi ad una carriera nella marina mercantile) acquista una nave francese (costruita nello stesso cantiere, ma nel 1895, mentre il Com.Louis Richard, ora Palinuro, venne costruito nel 1934); si tratta del Fantome II ex Belem che dal 1939 giace in rovina in un porto di Cowes nell’Isola di Wight. La nave viene restaurata e l’attrezzatura velica modificata, ma viene mantenuta la colorazione dello scafo che era caratterizzata dalla banda bianca con i portelli neri.

Viene quindi da chiedersi se il “Palinuro” si sia ispirato al “Giorgio Cini” nel nuovo look che viene adottato come si diceva in una data imprecisata tra il 1955 e la fine degli anni ’50.
L’allegata locandina in pdf , purtroppo non è datata ma si puo’ stimare che sia stata edita negli anni ’60 del secolo scorso.

IL MIO DIPINTO
Il “Palinuro” è raffigurato negli anni ’60 , durante una campagna di istruzione. E’ rimasto un pò di mare lungo mentre spira una brezza leggera, viene fatta l’esercitazione di uomo a mare. La nave viene messa in panna e viene calata in mare la scialuppa per il recupero del salvagente.

After entering service at the Italian Navy in the second half of the ’50s and painted with the scheme adopted for the “Vespucci” (and Colombo), in the 60s the photographic documentation shows a change in the hull coloring scheme that will be the one that with few variations will arrive up to the present.
The white band, connecting with the frieze of the bow, does not appear horizontally, but from the bow it descends almost to the float at the stern. on the white band 18 black doors have been painted.
This scheme was adopted by merchant ships of the second half of the 1800s and served, from a distance, to exchange the cargo ship for a warship and then try to keep away the barbarian pirates that infested the waters (and the coastlines) ) of the Mediterranean.
The sides of the formwork (the elevated structure that from half a ship ends at the stern) initially painted ocher, in the new scheme are painted white, while the aft steering retains the ocher color of the previous scheme.
It is curious that in the same years, in particular in 1951, the Cini Foundation, for its Marine Center (born to help the orphans of seafarers who died during the war, to start a career in the merchant navy) buys a French ship ( built in the same building site, but in 1895, while the Com.Louis Richard, now Palinuro was built in 1934); it is the Fantome II ex Belem that since 1939 lies in ruins in a port of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The ship is restored and the sailing equipment modified, but the color of the hull that was characterized by the white band with the black doors is maintained.
One wonders if the “Palinuro” was inspired by the “Giorgio Cini” in the new look that is adopted as we said on an unspecified date between 1955 and the end of the 50s.
The attached poster in pdf, unfortunately, is not dated but we can estimate that it was published in the 60s of the last century.

My Painting
The “Palinuro” is depicted in the 60s, during an educational campaign. There is a bit of sea along while a light breeze is blowing, the man-over-sea exercise is done. The ship is put into cream and the lifeboat for the recovery of the life jacket is lowered into the sea.
